St Wilfrid’s RC College, South Shields, was honoured to welcome Bishop Stephen Wright for his first official visit to the school community. A key highlight of the visit was the official opening of The Pantry, the school’s newly established food bank designed to support pupils and families within the local community.
Entirely stocked through the generosity of pupils, families, and staff, The Pantry stands as a living expression of Catholic Social Teaching and a testament to the school’s commitment to compassion, dignity, and service.
The initiative reflects core principles of Catholic Social Teaching, particularly human dignity, solidarity, and the preferential option for the poor. Bishop Stephen blessed The Pantry and praised the school community for its collective effort to support those facing hardship.
During his visit to St. Wilfrid’s, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, Bishop Stephen also met with Year 10 pupils for a lively question‑and‑answer session. Lacey, Year 10 said, “The Bishop was very easy to talk and ask questions to. His views were inspiring, he was so nice. It was a great experience to be a part of.”
Pupils explored topics such as faith in modern life, moral decision‑making, and the challenges of living out Gospel values today. Many commented on how deeply they were struck by Bishop Stephen’s reminder that every person is made in the image and likeness of God.
Bishop Stephen continued his tour with a visit to the school’s much‑loved Prom Shop, another initiative aimed at supporting families by providing formalwear at no cost. He also spent time in several Religious Education lessons, sharing personal experiences and theological insights. Discussions ranged from Rublev’s Trinity to the surprising ways contemporary culture - such as the music of Harry Styles, can connect to ethical theories like Utilitarianism.
Catherine Lennox, Headteacher, said, “We were honoured to welcome Bishop Stephen to St Wilfrid’s. His encouragement and kind words left a lasting impression on the pupils and staff he spent time with. His blessing of The Pantry reminds us of the call to serve others with compassion and dignity; core values of our school community.”
As St Wilfrid’s continues its mission to serve, learn, and grow in faith, Bishop Stephen’s visit has strengthened the school’s commitment to community action and Gospel‑inspired service. The school welcomes support from individuals or organisations who may be able to contribute to The Pantry.
