Enthusiastic Young Leaders from St. Wilfrid’s RC College, South Shields were delighted to attend the Lord’s Taverners SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Softball Cricket Regional competition hosted by Durham Cricket Foundation at Philadelphia Cricket Club, this week.

The Foundation supports inclusive sport and physical activity for young people with special educational needs and disabilities and welcoming 100 SEND pupils from eight schools across the region.

The Young Leaders from St. Wilfrid’s, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, volunteered throughout the day to help run activities, officiate games, and support participants.

Lucie, Year 12, said, “I loved the experience of delivering cricket skills to SEN pupils. It challenged me to be creative, patient, and adaptable, while significantly developing my leadership skills in an inclusive environment.”

Helen Nutall, PE Teacher at St. Wilfrid’s, said, “By delivering cricket coaching sessions to younger pupils within the wider community, student sports leaders demonstrated strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills. This enrichment activity not only enhanced participants’ cricket skills but also supported the personal development of the leaders themselves. Their commitment, professionalism, and positive attitude reflected great credit on both the students and the school, strengthening links with the local community.”

Dr. Lauren Kamperman, Head of Community Inclusion & Growth at Durham Cricket Foundation, said, “Durham Cricket Foundation is excited to welcome schools to our SEND softball regionals competition at Philadelphia Cricket Club. Today is all about ensuring the children have fun playing cricket in an inclusive and supportive environment. Young Leaders are also given the opportunity to build leadership skills and confidence.”

Daryl Smith, Disability Inclusion Officer, Durham County, added, “This is the second year working with St Wilfrid’s pupils, and the leaders were amazing. They supported and enhanced the cricket games throughout the day and were very organised and approachable.”

All participating pupils and schools will receive medals and trophies in recognition of their teamwork, effort, and sportsmanship.
