A primary school in Hebburn has received a glowing report from Catholic education inspectors for its “supportive and joyful community”, “exemplary” staff and proud pupils who enjoy their lessons and feel loved and valued.

St Aloysius Catholic Junior School, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, was recently inspected by the Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI) and rated ‘Outstanding’.

The CSI, which judges Catholic schools on overall effectiveness, Catholic life and mission, religious education, and collective worship, found that pupils at the school have a “clear understanding of the fact that they are known, valued and loved as individuals”.

CSI lead inspector Claire Garbutt said in her report: “There is a lived sense of community at St Aloysius where there is strength in relationships, a deep respect and dignity for each other and a genuine culture of welcome.

“There is a flourishing partnership between home, school and parish which is deeply appreciated by all. Outcomes in religious education for pupils are strong, underpinned by effective teaching rooted in clear subject knowledge with a focus on challenge and depth of learning.

“Scripture is used authentically and the ways in which pupils can articulate how this impacts their actions and daily lives is well embedded and an integral part of learning.”

Pupils actively contribute to leadership opportunities such as RE Ambassadors and Mini Vinnies and “talk passionately” about their contribution to the school, parish and wider community.

“Everyone is valued, without exception, in a supportive and joyful community,” continued the report.

“Staff are deeply committed to all that the school offers and see themselves as an integral part of its outward mission. It is clear that staff feel the distinctive nature of Catholicity at St Aloysius and that the ethos of the school is part of their everyday life. Therefore, staff are exemplary role models who provide the highest level of care for all pupils and as a result, St Aloysius is a highly inclusive school.”

The CSI inspectors also found a “clear collaboration” and “harmonious partnership” between the school and parish. The school has “highly successful strategies” for engaging with and providing opportunities for parents to feel supported in their child’s faith journey such as the Kindness Café and events for grandparents.

“As a result of the school’s well embedded approach to the use of scripture, pupils are able to confidently articulate their theological understanding and how this impacts on their daily lives and the lives of others,” added the report.

“Pupils have great pride in their work which is of a consistently high quality. Work in books is presented beautifully, tasks are well designed and creativity is evident. Pupils have clear enjoyment for religious education lessons and as a result are fully engaged and concentrate exceptionally well.  They are religiously literate, use subject specific vocabulary and show a great awareness of the demands of religious commitment rooted in real life examples.

“Teachers are skilled practitioners with strong, authentic subject knowledge and a clear understanding of the pedagogy relevant to their phase. Highly skilled teaching underpinned by effective questioning and ‘in the moment’ specific feedback enables pupils to develop their spiritual and moral purpose.

“The subject leader for religious education has an inspiring vision and a high level of expertise in securing this. Her analytical skills, reflection and challenge ensures that strategic action is well targeted and leads to effective outcomes. The subject leader is deeply committed to sharing her expertise for the benefit of others as she has a drive for excellence. She is an enthusiastic advocate for religious education and actively encourages staff.”

Headteacher Anna Tumelty said: “Our pupils are at the heart of everything we do, and their enthusiasm, kindness, and commitment to learning shine through in every aspect of school life. We are incredibly proud of them.

“This achievement also recognises the dedication and hard work of our staff, who consistently go above and beyond to provide an exceptional education and a nurturing environment for every child.

“We are equally grateful for the unwavering support of our families. Their partnership with the school strengthens all that we do and ensures that our pupils thrive both academically and personally.

“Finally, our strong and cherished links with our parish continue to guide and inspire our community. The shared mission and faith we hold with the parish play an integral role in shaping the vibrant, caring, and inclusive school we are proud to be.”

The school, which also has an infant school and nursery on the same site, was inspected by the CSI this month [March 2026] on behalf of the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle.
